A high level Technical University of Denmark has concluded that the fastest way to a low-carbon energy system is an interconnected smart power grid for Europe.
Denmark could become independent of fossil fuels by implementing energy efficiency measures in all sectors from power generation to housing and transport. But increasing renewables to become the dominant power source will require a radical transformation of energy systems.
The main enabling step would be a European-wide intelligent power grid that would allow the storage of a much higher level of renewable energy.
This kind of major overhaul of infrastructure will not come without strong direction from authorities nationally and at the European level.
However, the experts could not rule out using fossil fuels for the immediate foreseeable future and recommend moving ahead with carbon capture and storage for power plants and energy-consuming industries.
The developed world should also help rapidly growing nations like India and China adopt sustainable energy technologies as widely and quickly as possible.
